Hardenhuish Avenue

The form of this striking contemporary extension was derived from the gentle curves of the existing bay windows. Carefully positioned glazing provide wonderful views into the garden, with just a high level strip of glass against the boundary ensuring total privacy, whilst allowing sunlight into the space throughout the day. The largely solid wall facing the boundary is super insulated to offset the amount of glass and clad in sustainably sourced cedar shingles to provide a distinct and textured contrast to the glass. The flat roof is formed in zinc, with edges which again echo the forms found elsewhere. The roof overhangs are designed to prevent overheating from the summer sun. A strip of roof glazing against the house allows natural light deep into the original kitchen area. High specification glazing combined with super insulated walls, underfloor heating and a wood burning stove result in a dramatic, comfortable and efficient family space all year round which flows seamlessly into the garden.
