Jasmine Cottage

We were approached by the clients to help them find a house with great potential to develop. Together we located an ordinary 1970s bungalow, which we were confident could be made into a contemporary and comfortable modern home. The existing structure was retained because it made economic and environmental sense. We then extended and reorganised the house to create a large open living space, with the kitchen off to one side. This then leads to more private areas containing bedrooms, bathrooms and a service area.

For environmental and aesthetic reasons we replaced all of the existing windows, overclad the structure in a rendered insulation system and fully insulated the roof. The roofing material was also replaced in slate to give the house a more contemporary look, whilst adding longevity. Read more...

The house is heated from a new underfloor heating system that provides excellent levels of comfort and efficiency. We also incorporated solar thermal panels onto the roof to help reduce the amount of energy required to run the house. The extension is built from a highly insulated timber frame, which is covered in sustainably sourced cedar timber cladding. This is left untreated to allow it to weather naturally and turn to a silvery grey, without having to repeatedly re-coat it.

The existing bathroom has been entirely re-furbished with new tiling and sanitaryware. We have also incorporated a new rooflight to provide good levels of natural daylight to the space. The main living space benefits from three new large format sliding doors, which can be slid back past the external walls. This allows the space to be entirely opened up to the outside and connects the house with the garden. The immediate space outside has been built up into a new terrace area, which is shaded by a new series of cedar louvres. These are principally designed to reduce the solar gain to the large sliding doors and prevent the house from over heating.
