The RIBA award-winning 'Beacon Edge' started out as a proposal to alter and extend a small 1960s bungalow on a large plot with potentially magnificent views. It soon became clear that building a new house would prove the more economical and energy efficient route, due to the site and existing house conditions.
An upside-down arrangement maximises the potential of this steeply sloping site. The upstairs living rooms benefit from level access to the rear garden and gain fantastic views over the World Heritage Site of Bath - views that were previously unseen from the level of the bungalow.
The sustainable principles used to guide every aspect of the new-build design have resulted in a comfortable new home that keeps a constant temperature throughout the year, even on the coldest and hottest days, despite all the glazing. The house also benefits from new passivhaus technology, including a Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery (MVHR) system, which means the house is healthy as well as comfortable to live in.
