Clouds Garden Lodge looked to develop a replacement house and guest annexe set within a beautiful 1.4 hectare walled garden, built in the late 19th Century. It was important for the dwelling to have a direct relationship to the garden itself reflecting the historic nature of the site and surrounding area while demonstrating a commitment to high quality, environmentally conscious design, and to provide a home that is suitable for contemporary living.
Situated within the Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) the walled garden was in need of maintenance and refurbishment to restore it to its original glory as a Walled Kitchen Garden for the nearby Grade II* Listed Clouds House. In response to the client’s aspiration for a contemporary transparent house that is a strong part of the garden, a modern interpretation of the masonry garden wall has been developed
The proposed dwelling draws inspiration from the site's historic character through a carefully considered palette of natural materials. Red brick and timber reference the materials used within the existing perimeter garden wall, while the lightweight zinc cladding to the first floor adds a refined and contemporary contrast. The design seeks to achieve a harmonious balance between traditional and modern architectural elements, expressed in a subtle and elegant manner. By combining timeless materials with contemporary detailing, the dwelling is intended to sit comfortably within its setting, reflecting and complementing the rich historic fabric and distinctive features that define the site.
