Nestled within the Malvern Hills and enjoying spectacular west-facing views towards Black Hill in Wales, this replacement dwelling occupies a sensitive conservation area setting. Designed and certified to the Passivhaus Plus standard, the project demonstrates how contemporary architecture can achieve exceptional environmental performance while responding respectfully to both its landscape and local vernacular.
A restrained palette of locally sourced materials allows the house to sit naturally within its surroundings. Scottish larch cladding is paired with Forest of Dean stone, creating a contemporary interpretation of traditional rural architecture. The use of natural timber and local stone gives the building a timeless quality while helping to reduce the environmental impact associated with material transportation.
Careful attention has been paid to managing solar gain and preventing summertime overheating. Fixed external shading devices have been strategically incorporated into the design, while mature existing trees provide natural protection from the afternoon sun. Together, these measures ensure comfortable internal conditions while preserving the building's strong visual connection to the landscape.
