This historic house is sat up on a hill with spectacular views over rolling countryside. It presented a great opportunity for extending to make the most of these views with large sliding glazing as well as using traditional materials like slate and stone in a way that both contrasts and compliments the existing house. The project also involved refurbishing the existing house to reinstate its former beauty and maximise natural light.
The clients wanted to recreate the bright, open-plan living they had enjoyed in their London loft apartment, while gaining an additional bedroom and a stronger connection to the garden and views. The challenge was extending the house without creating dark, underused spaces at its centre.
By removing an existing bedroom and ensuite, we introduced a dramatic double-height space that brings daylight deep into the home. This allowed for a new open-plan kitchen and garden room, carefully angled to capture the best views and distinguish the extension from the original house. Targeted first-floor alterations reinstated the bathroom and created the additional bedroom, while new sash windows helped unify old and new. The result is a light-filled, spacious family home with generous living areas and exceptional views.
