Set within six acres of private landscape in the Cambridgeshire countryside, this striking replacement dwelling has been designed to maximise its unique relationship with a spectacular 2.3 acre lake. The site is shaped by three defining landscape features: the former gravel pit lake, a substantial embankment along the northern boundary that once carried the Cambridge to St Ives railway line, and a dyke to the west protecting the site from the River Great Ouse. Together, these features create an extraordinary setting that provided the inspiration for the new home.
The existing house failed to engage with the lake, turning its back on what is undoubtedly the site's greatest asset. In contrast, the new dwelling has been carefully arranged to establish a strong visual and physical connection with the water, opening up key living spaces to long views across the lake and surrounding landscape.
The wider landscape has been designed as an extension of the architecture, with a series of carefully curated outdoor spaces including an infinity-edge swimming pool, generous concrete terraces, a barbecue area, basketball court, football pitch and a separate lakeside office building. Together, these elements create a resort-like environment that takes full advantage of the site's exceptional setting.
