Bradford Road is an award winning retrofit project demonstrating that with good design it’s possible to totally transform a very ordinary, poorly performing 1930’s bungalow into a beautiful, contemporary, highly sustainable home. Built to Passivhaus principles, with a more than 90% improvement in energy in use, this project has not only improved the building fabrics performance but increased the houses connection to nature improving both comfort levels and wellbeing.

Internally as you enter, you see through to the garden beyond, drawing you into the living room, passing the top lit oak staircase. Wellbeing was an important aspect of the client brief and the constant connection to nature and high levels of natural light on the site has created a calm and meditative place to live.

The north and south sides of the house are very different, the north is modest with minimal openings, while still welcoming visitors through the larch lined entrance porch. The south is more expressive, opening to the sun and the wider landscape beyond. The original volume of the house is clad in cedar shingles distinct from the flat roof extensions in charred Siberian Larch. The lightweight timber cladding has totally transformed the appearance of the property while allowing for the existing structure to be retained and overclad in insulation to create a high performing building fabric.
