Sat within a diverse array of properties in Bristol, Great Brockeridge holds its own. This extension and renovation project significantly improved the appearance, performance, and layout of the original 1960s property by remodelling the front elevation, extending the upper ground floor at the rear, increasing the roof pitch, adding accommodation in the attic and recladding and insulating the entire building.
The extension complements the existing building through the use of a carefully selected render at lower level and matching blue-black clay tiles above. The natural variation in the clay tiles adds depth, texture and character to the façade. To the rear, a distinctive pitched roof responds to the building’s geometry, creating light-filled interiors with open roof spaces and strategically positioned skylights, while minimising overshadowing to the garden and neighbouring properties.
The external material treatments enable substantial improvement of the thermal performance of the building fabric. The remodelled roof and new build walls are designed and built to perform above current building regulations. The vertical hung tiles and the new render coating to the existing structure allow the existing walls to be externally insulated, greatly improving its environmental performance.
