
CaSA collaborated closely with SEED Landscape to develop a site-wide narrative rooted in the rich history of the surroundings. Drawing inspiration from ancient hillforts, medieval settlements and local vernacular architecture, the concept imagines an inhabited chalk ruin embedded within a fortified landscape. This approach allows the house to become part of the landform, creating a strong sense of place while capturing panoramic views across the surrounding countryside.

The architecture combines locally sourced flint and rammed chalk with a contemporary timber shingle roof, resulting in a design that is both innovative and deeply connected to its setting. The restrained palette of natural materials helps the building sit comfortably within the landscape, balancing traditional craftsmanship with a contemporary architectural expression.

Despite the challenges of the sensitive site, the scheme secured Paragraph 84 planning approval with strong support from both Wiltshire Council and the Design Review Panel, who recognised the proposal as an outstanding response to its context. The success of the project demonstrates how ambitious contemporary architecture can be delivered through a thoughtful and site-specific design approach.
